RE: Healthcare Workers in favor of AB 1400 (#CalCare),
the California Guaranteed Health Care For All Act

Dear Assemblymember,
‍
We write as concerned healthcare providers on the frontlines of patient care representing a wide cross-section of specialties and disciplines from all over our great state.
‍
We see AB 1400 as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our state to be the leader in healthcare access for all and pave the way for the rest of the nation to follow.
‍
We kindly yet fervently urge you to support its passage.
‍
A single-payer system would guarantee a single, publicly-funded, publicly-supervised financing stream to pay for medical services for all our people while giving patients the flexibility to choose from public and private care providers to best address their specific needs. This will be a welcome relief to the fragmented and wasteful system we have today that has squandered billions of dollars and cost countless lives.
‍
AB 1400 would go a long way in loosening the grip over medical care by corporate power such as the hospital, insurance and pharmaceutical giants. Often the highest aim of such groups is financial gain regardless of the consequences. Patients and providers alike have suffered as a soul-drenching pursuit of profits has erected barrier upon barrier in the delivery of equitable, compassionate and high-quality care.

Indeed, often overlooked, AB 1400 would also be a boon for the business community as businesses can focus on their most essential functions rather than negotiating and paying for their employees’ health care. Our current pandemic has shown that health insurance tied to employment is a failed model. During this pandemic, as millions lost jobs through no fault of their own, entire communities lost access to health care, particularly preventative care at a time when it was needed most.

This letter comes with an additional sense of urgency as “Organized Medicine”, the perceived voice of physicians and health care workers, have frequently been on the wrong side of essential questions of healthcare.
Throughout the last century, such groups including the American Medical Association (AMA) and California Medical Association (CMA) stood in the way of the creation of Medicaid and Medicare and even delayed racial desegregation of their own regional medical societies. Now their opposition comes to the latest attempt at expansion of public health insurance to all our people,  which every major industrialized nation has long already done. Just as past opposition to programs such as Medicare have proved to be an ugly blemish in organized medicine’s history, so too will the latest opposition to AB 1400 be judged by posterity as a failure to stand for the highest ideals of our profession.
‍
For whatever good they may offer, we cannot simply ignore the irreparable harm caused by these stances taken by “Organized Medicine.” This latest position compels us to make our voice clear: we must pass AB 1400 in CA and pave the way for Medicare-for-All for our nation.
‍
During the current COVID-19 pandemic, we have learned of the interconnected nature of humanity. The health of one is tied to the health of all. When people cannot afford health care including basic preventative care such as vaccines and PPE, we all suffer. We are only as healthy as the most vulnerable members of society.
‍
By passing AB 1400, California can be the leader that our nation so desperately needs at this moment - to show we are united to care for all our people regardless of political affiliation, geographic location, income, race or any other status.
‍
There can be no more delay - We must act now!
